2018 Notes

The year started with one of the coldest events in decades, and then flipped.  At the mid-point in the year the average temp was almost 0.6° above the 20 year average.  July, August and September were all above average.  Then October started the turn, with the second coldest in 21 years.  It was followed by the coldest November in my records.  December was below average to bring 2018 down to so close to normal is paints an inaccurate picture of how the year progressed.

This year had 17 record high temps and 17 record lows.

There were 16 days that set records for warmest low temp of that date.

Records set for cold high temps is 19.  So grand totals was 33 warm records set and 36 cold records set.  This is so close to the mathematical average!

Over 21 years, if every year was average they would have 34 warm records and 34 cold records, because a day cannot set a record high temp AND a record cool high temp.

We had six months that were warmer than average and six that were colder than average. No months were average (temp within 0.2°.)

Monthly temperature rankings for this year are:

October   20th

November   21st

December   12th

The year was heading for the driest year in my data but the final week of October with 6” of rain made quite a difference.  The year only has two years lower, 2001 and 2016 which was the driest by quite a bit.

2018 was fifth for snowfall, only 0.20” above 2008 in the next spot.  Pretty much the entire amount above average occurred in March and November.

The average top gust of the day was up a bit but the trend is still calmer than average.  I have wondered if it is tree growth near the house, but have been taking some out for firewood at a pretty steady pace so not sure if that is a factor. Installed new wind gage in January, 2019.
